Newsletter Term 4 Week 7 2022
"We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians on whose land our school rests. Their footsteps and whispers blow in the wind, drift on the clouds, remain deep in the sandstone and float on the waterways of this place. Their memories and Dreaming stories will continue to connect us to the land and guide future generations of our school community. Country is alive if you take the time to look, listen and learn."

Owen Taylor Memorial Ceremony
On Tuesday the 29th of November we will be unveiling the commemorative statue installed in our fort playground to honour the legacy of our late Principal, Mr Owen Taylor. Mr Taylor led our school from 2012-2019 and his kindness, fairness and dedication to his students ensured he was held in high regard by students, parents and teachers alike.
Our statue installation will ensure Mr Taylor’s legacy remains at the heart of our school in the years to come.
We will be hosting an unveiling ceremony at 12noon, followed by a community lunch that we invite parents to join us for. We will also be holding a special bbq lunch as Mr Taylor loved nothing more than a sausage sizzle with the kids!
Thank you to the many parents who have offered to assist with our memorial ceremony for Mr Taylor next Tuesday the 29th of November. I would also like to acknowledge Rachel Ridley, Amanda Mason, Colleen Tobler and Deb Horsley for coordinating and organising this special event.
Working Bee
Our wonderful P&C have organised a working bee for this Sunday. It would be fabulous if you could join us for an hour or so to assist with gardening and finishing off our yarning circle that has been designed by our Stage 3 students. See below the sign up sheet and details for the morning. Many of our Stage 3 students are planning to come and help us out and finish off with a sausage sizzle!
Kindergarten Orientation
Another fabulous morning with our new Kindergarten students. Thank you also to our current kindergarten parents for hosting our parent morning tea and spending time answering questions and supporting our new families. It was a lovely morning.
Forest Enrichment Program
It was lovely to be part of the Forest Enrichment showcase again this term. I am always incredibly proud of our students at these times. The standard of their work, their engagement and attitudes to their learning.
For the past 10 weeks, five of our Year 5 students have attended Forest High School each Wednesday as part of an enrichment program. They have had high school teachers take them for English, maths, science, drama, HSIE, Japanese, woodwork and food technology lessons. The students have loved the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in high school, especially when in the science lab! Last week, the group concluded their time with a showcase for their parents and teachers. Henry R, Matthew D and Darcy Y presented their poems about world issues and Jess D and Scarlett P presented what they had learnt in Japanese. Well done everyone!
Report Feedback
With the changes to curriculum in 2023, increased student autonomy over their learning and a continued focus on wellbeing as well as academic progress, we feel this is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what is working well and what we can improve in our reporting processes.. We value your feedback and would appreciate 5 minutes of your time to answer a quick survey.
Dates
Last day of term for students is Friday the 16th of December. The school is open on Monday the 19th of December as this is a Professional Learning day for staff. Kulkunna is open for bookings for the week leading up to Christmas. As well as their usual holiday programs.

Borrowing
Next week will be the last week of borrowing, in order for us to complete our annual stocktake. Please help your children to remember to return their books. There will be an opportunity, however, in week 10 for students to borrow if they wish to for the holidays.
Research in Stage 2
This term during library lessons our Year 3 and 4 classes have been investigating the native plants in our local area, how they grow and the traditional uses for these plants. Students used their research to create google slide presentations and linked these to scannable QR codes. As well as learning and practicing research skills the students reinforced their digital knowledge of sharing files from google drive, creating engaging google slide presentations and generating QR codes. You will find some excellent examples of these below.

The Life Education van is coming to BNPS!
The Life Education van will be visiting our school from Thursday 24th November to Friday 2nd December 2022. ‘Life Education’ lessons are an important part of our Personal Development and Health curriculum and as the name suggests they give students knowledge and skills for life.
A mobile classroom will come to the school where students have their lessons. The Life Education teachers are experienced and bring varied resources with them to enhance student learning. This is an excellent opportunity for all students.
Below is a brief outline of the programs that will be taught to the students this year:
Kindergarten | My Body Matters | Students learn about healthy food choices, importance of physical activity and safety. |
Stage One (Years 1 & 2) | Ready, Steady, Go! | Students explore body workings, safe use and storage of medicines, peer pressure and coping strategies, safety and decision making. |
Stage Two (Years 3 & 4) | Mind Your Medicine | Students develop an understanding of medicines and their safe use, positive communication, strategies for managing conflict and stress and explore how feelings influence the choices that we make. |
Stage Three (Years 5 & 6) | Decisions | Students explore the decision-making process and improve decision-making skills by looking at choices, consequences, responsibility, facts and influences. |
Healthy Harold the giraffe can’t wait to meet all of our fantastic BNPS students over the next 2 weeks.
