Newsletter Term 2 Week 1 2023
"We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians on whose land our school rests. Their footsteps and whispers blow in the wind, drift on the clouds, remain deep in the sandstone and float on the waterways of this place. Their memories and Dreaming stories will continue to connect us to the land and guide future generations of our school community. Country is alive if you take the time to look, listen and learn."
Matthew D and Darcy Y representing Balgowlah North Public School at yesterdays ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Manly Dam.

Principal’s Message
Welcome back to Term 2. Wonderful to see the smiles on everyone’s faces this morning as they came through the school gates. Monday was an opportunity for our staff to come together and connect and learn with schools across our Beaches network.
Working with Royal Far West staff we engaged in an On Country walk through the beautiful Manly Dam, connected through the SWAY program and spent time yarning and creating artworks.
The afternoon culminated at Curl Curl North connecting with schools from across the Beaches and listening to Stan Grant share his story of growing up in Australia. A day of reflecting, sharing and learning.
P&C AGM
The P&C AGM will be held on Wednesday 10th May 7.30pm in the school library.
Annual School Report
The ASR for 2022 was published at the end of Term 1. Our report connects to our school improvement plan, reporting on progress of targets, it also provides a snapshot of enrolment profile, workforce and financial information. I have included a snapshot of the parent/teacher and student satisfaction below.
Parent, teacher,student satisfaction
“Students have a strong sense of belonging. Tell Them from Me data increased 10% to 85% from 2021. Students felt they had positive relationships 93% which was 8% above the NSW Govt norm. 95% of students value school outcomes which has increased from 88% in 2021.
94% of students participate in sports which is 11% above the NSW Govt norm.
Teacher feedback from Tell Them From Me data has shown growth in leadership satisfaction 8.5/10, inclusive school 9.0/10 and collaboration 8.5/10.
Parent participation in school life in 2022 grew as health parameters changed to allow parents back into schools. In 2022 the P&C provided opportunities for families to participate in P&C meetings, Parent Night events, family movie nights, and a disco.
Parents are involved with Band and Strings programs, class parent roles, representatives on committees, panels for staffing, working bees and assisting teachers on excursions and in classroom learning opportunities.Parent responses numbers on the Tell Them From Me survey was low, although engagement at P&C meetings was high and as we are now moving towards parents having opportunities to participate again within school life a greater sense of belonging is growing.”

Parent World's Greatest Shave and 'Zany' Hair Day
BNPS have registered to take part in their year’s World’s Greatest Shave on Wednesday, 3rd May to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Year 6 pupils will shave, cut or colour their hair and Kindy to Year 5 will also participate with a Zany Hair Day.
Every day, 53 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer, and 16 will lose their life. Money raised through our efforts will give families facing blood cancer the special care, support and information they need – while driving breakthrough research projects discovering better ways to diagnose and treat blood cancer.
Please follow this link to sponsor a Year 6 student or donate to the BNPS Year 6 team for Zany Hair Day. You can also donate cash on 3rd May at school.

The link below gives on information on Opportunuty classes for students going into Year 5 in 2024.
Ethics
Our Primary Ethics team is seeking more volunteers to teach Primary Ethics. We particularly need volunteers for Kindergarten, year 1, year 4 and year 6 students.
Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design the curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and the development of their critical thinking skills. You must be available to teach a 30 minute class on a Thursday afternoon each week. All lesson materials are provided.
In ethics classes, we aim to give students an opportunity to discuss and think for themselves about ethical issues relevant to them.
Students discuss topics such as:
- empathy;
- being an ethical consumer;
- how should we treat living things;
- how do we know when we have done something wrong?;
- intentions and knowledge - what might a whale know?; and
- understanding diversity.
If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school and be part of a great program, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au. You can also email our Primary Ethics Coordinator Susan Gray at bnpsethics@gmail.com for further information.
