Newsletter Term 2 Week 6 2022
"We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians on whose land our school rests. Their footsteps and whispers blow in the wind, drift on the clouds, remain deep in the sandstone and float on the waterways of this place. Their memories and Dreaming stories will continue to connect us to the land and guide future generations of our school community. Country is alive if you take the time to look, listen and learn."
Principal's message
Be Brave Make Change
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The Week runs from 27 May to 3 June every year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.
Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2022, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so that we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly, as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As a demonstration of our commitment to reconciliation, this week during Monday morning lines, the school gathered on our front playground, where we held a flag raising ceremony. The National flag and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were raised together by our student leaders, while the school watched and reflected on the meaning of reconciliation. Students will be engaged in learning activities throughout the week to understand how, as individuals, we can “be brave and make change”.
Thank you
Thank you to Rachel Ridley and Jenni Reinhardt for stepping into the Principal and Deputy Principal roles for the past two weeks. These are fabulous learning opportunities for our leadership team, as it gives them an opportunity to continue to refine and build their knowledge and skills.
Our leadership team has also been attending Professional Learning with our community of schools. Focussing on the work of Viviane Robinson and Stephen Dineham. Providing opportunities for staff to work collegially with others is an important aspect of our work in schools.
Many of our teachers have also been attending Professional Learning in mathematics at the Dee Why office. It is fabulous to be able to reconnect with Professional Learning face to face and build connections across our network.
Connections
Mr Nathan Lawler, Principal of Forest High School, will be presenting at our next virtual P&C meeting on the 22nd of June. A fabulous opportunity to hear more about our local high school and to hear his vision for the future of the school. Today we have Forest High teachers working with our stage 3 teachers, collaborating and sharing practice. Our teachers will also have an opportunity to visit with teachers at Forest High. These opportunities strengthen our links across the network as well as providing time for sharing of professional practice. I look forward to celebrating our students this afternoon as they showcase the work they have been involved with through the enrichment program.
Congratulations to our Concert Band who gave an excellent performance at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High School on Tuesday evening. They performed three songs and received comments and a brief workshop from the Mackeller Girls High Band Director who gave positive feedback. Well done team! Thank you to Mr S for his encouraging conducting.
We are looking forward to seeing our Junior Band and Senior Band performing at the same event in the next week.

80th Anniversary “When the War Came to Sydney”
On Friday the 27th of May, the School Captains of BNPS and Mrs Stock went to North Head for the commemoration of “When the War Came to Sydney”. It was very interesting listening to people talk about how the submarines came into the heads and tried to invade Sydney. The captains placed a wreath on behalf of our school. Lots of other schools came along too and it was a very successful event.
