Newsletter Term 3 Week 5 2022
"We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians on whose land our school rests. Their footsteps and whispers blow in the wind, drift on the clouds, remain deep in the sandstone and float on the waterways of this place. Their memories and Dreaming stories will continue to connect us to the land and guide future generations of our school community. Country is alive if you take the time to look, listen and learn."
Principal's message
As we reach the mid- way point of a bustling term, it is so lovely to see our students engaged in the rich tapestry of experiences our wonderful school offers. Highlights of our busy calendar this week include performances from Musica Viva, the highly anticipated P&C School Disco and our fundraiser to support Isaac R as he heads off to the National Cross Country. We also congratulate another sporting dynamo, Toby O, who will represent the State as part of the hockey team. Go boys!
It is with utmost pride that we congratulate one of our incredible students, Neve Morris of 2M, who has been awarded as the K - 2 category winner in the 2022 Northern Beaches Young Writers’ Competition. We are so proud of you Neve and we can all be inspired by your passion and talent for writing.
We would like to extend our gratitude to our community of committed families who came to participate in the Working Bee last weekend. Not only do these days offer the opportunity for community connection, but they are important in ensuring our school continues to be a sanctuary for our students.
You may notice some fresh faces in our school community over coming weeks as we are joined by several student teachers who are completing professional experience placements within our school. We welcome Claire Leask on 3M, Erin Brady on 4W and Olivia Wright on KC. Ongoing support of the development of our next generation of teachers is highly valued by our staff and an ongoing commitment we make to continue the integrity of our profession.
With some glimpses of spring sunshine brightening our days, we remind parents that students must bring their hat to school every day. Students without a hat will be asked to remain under shaded areas at playtime. Cool mornings and warm afternoons also signal the return of the overflowing lost property bins as students peel off layers of clothing throughout the school day. Please ensure all of your child’s clothing is clearly labeled so that it is traceable should it not return in their school bag at the end of the day.
Kind regards

Year 1 Phonics Screener
This week, our Year One students will be participating in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, individual assessment of approximately 5-7 minutes where the Classroom Teacher is able to ascertain how students are progressing in their ability to blend sounds together to make words.
Student responses are mapped to indicators from the National Literacy learning progression and complement existing strategies to identify students’ progress in developing foundational literacy skills.
Assessment results will inform further programming for targeted teaching and learning.

Junior Netball Semi Finals
Last Friday on the 12th of August, the Junior Netball A’s and B’s had a nail biting semi-final match. We are very excited that both junior netball teams won their games, with the Junior A’s beating Manly West in a goal for goal match with us scoring a goal in the last 5 seconds. The Junior B’s had a tough first half but came back stronger in the second half against Curl Curl North. This coming Friday, both junior teams will be playing in the Grand Final, where we are hoping for the best! On behalf of the Balgowlah North junior netball teams we would like to thank our incredible coach Miss McIndoe for the wonderful tips.

Musica viva
It’s safe to say that students of all ages and musical abilities loved their time with live music band, Musica Viva, yesterday. They learnt about different instruments, pitch, harmony, and belly dancing with candles! It was a hugely engaging and entertaining experience that highlighted the joy that music can bring. A few classes were able to reflect on their time and you’ll see some of their positive responses in the word cloud below.
Students were able to sing words they’ve been learning with Ms Saab in languages that include Turkish, Kurdish and Welsh. This theme of ‘Music and Dance Across Cultures’ will be carried through the rest of the term and into the dance syllabus next term.

Working bee
Thanks to all who came out on Sunday to lend a hand at our P&C led school working bee. We removed many non-native plants from the garden area at the corner of Mons Road and Manning Street. Our GA, Mr Gualter, can plant some nice natives there now. We welcomed our new hens and planted 2 avocado trees in their outdoor area. The mulberry got a good prune, lots of weeds were pulled and a new green house was built. Great job everyone!
