Principal's report
Celebrations
Last Friday we celebrated World Teacher’s Day. As many of you are aware the role of a teacher is extremely complex. Our teachers work is more than just teaching and learning. At the heart of it our profession provides the opportunity to make a true difference in a student’s life and enables a direct impact on our global world. We appreciate and celebrate the wonderful teachers we have at Balgowlah North Public school.
On that note today, our amazing Julia Gough will be taking maternity leave we wish her well on her next life adventure!
Yesterday was a great opportunity for our Kindergarten and Year One students to get active and enjoy the sunshine! Thank you to Olivia Wakelin and Molly Mc Indoe for their organisation of the event.
New play space
We now have another new area complete near Koolkuna. Great to see another space to be used by our students for outdoor learning opportunities, and a place for our teachers to have lunch together during these COVID times!
NAIDOC Week
Next week we recognise NAIDOC Week – ‘Always was, Always Will be’. We will begin the week with an official flag raising ceremony. We will be flying the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag along with our Australian flag. We also have Eleanor Clapham presenting a performance to our K-2 students this Friday the 6th November. Matthew Doyle will be presenting to our 3-6 students on Wednesday 2nd December. Thank you to Camille Hadley for the organisation of these events.
Kindergarten Orientation
We welcome our Kindergarten 2021 students to their first orientation this Friday. Our current Kindergarten students will be spending the morning with our other classes across the school while the orientation is conducted. The Virtual Information session for Kindergarten 2021 parents is on Thursday at 4pm. All details have been sent to attending parents already. Please contact the school as soon as possible if you have not received this information. Thank you to our current Kindergarten team for providing such a rich learning opportunity and introduction to school for our incoming Kindergarten students.
Parent Forums
Thank you to the parents who attended the parent forum this morning. There will be further opportunities for parents to engage with the school in this format. Please take the time to connect with these parents. I appreciated the deep commitment and engagement that the parents brought to this important work. Further opportunities will be provided at different times and days to allow a variety of parents to participate. It is important for us to continue to strengthen our community engagement in our students learning.

Band
Our bands are having open rehearsals all this week and we encourage our Year 2 students to visit a rehearsal. Our band program relies on our intake from Year 2 to Year 3 in the Junior Band. Please see the band tab of this newsletter for further information.
Later this term, as a reward for the efforts of our band and strings students, they will be treated to an African Drumming workshop. It has been a challenging year for our band and strings students, with restrictions on performances and rehearsals, however, we have been proud of their resilience and ability to try new ways to rehearse and perform.
Year 6 Camp
Thank you to Miss Vitale and Mr Zeppel for accompanying us on our Year 6 camp. As this newsletter goes to publication, we are having a marvelous time at Adventureland, Forster, and look forward to sharing some photos in next week's newsletter.

Library news
Deborah Abela
Next Monday and Tuesday we are very excited to be welcoming our visiting author Deborah Abela to our school. Deborah trained as a teacher before becoming writer/producer of a national children’s TV show at Network TEN. Since then, she has become an internationally published and awarded author of 26 books including her climate change trilogy, Grimsdon, New City and Final Storm. Her family’s survival in WW2 and migration to Australia inspired Teresa A New Australian. The Stupendously Spectacular Spelling Bee and The Most Marvellous Spelling Bee Mystery were inspired by her grade 4 teacher. Her picture books are, Wolfie, An Unlikely Hero and Bear in Space (2020). Deborah has won awards for her work but mostly hopes to be as brave as her characters.
Students will attend a one hour presentation from Deborah with their grade in the hall. All classes have been introduced to her books in library lessons and in class. Students can order signed copies of Deborah Abela’s books from the link below. Alternatively, you can call The Children’s Bookshop directly on 9571 1897 to order and pay over the phone.
The books will be delivered to the school.
